About the Wine

Château Calon de Segur is a legend. Since 1855, it has been recognized as one of the fourteen third great growths in Bordeaux. Marquis de Calon is the second wine from the property from Wine Enthusiasts 95 point 2017 vintage!

Calon-Segur is located in the northern part of Saint-Estephe, very close to the Gironde river and about five miles due north of Ch. Lafite Rothschild. The first records of Château Calon Segur date back to Gallo-Roman times. In fact, it is believed that this was one of the oldest Châteaux in all of Saint-Estèphe. After many years and a variety of owners, it finally became the property of the Marques de Segur, who also owned Château Lafite, Latour, and Mouton. The estate's logo comes from the famous phrase of the Marquess: "I make my wine at Lafite and Latour, but my heart is in Calon."

In 1894, Georges Gasqueton and his uncle Charles Hanappier bought the estate. They ran the property until 2012 and were responsible for some of the most legendary vintages to date: 1920, 1940, and 1950.

Madame Denise Gasqueton, along with her daughter Hélène, became the owner and leader after the death of her husband Philippe Gasqueton. They were the first to bring modernity to the estate and they renovated the winery and the vineyards.

In 2012 the property was acquired by the French insurance company Suravenir. Since this change of owners, the property begun a serious modernization process, especially in the wine and barrel cellar. Recently, in September 2020, the owners of Château Calon Segur (Suravenir Group) acquired Chateau Vray Croix de Gay, Pomerol, Chateau Siaurac, in the Lalande de Pomerol appellation and Chateau Le Prieure in St. Emilion from the owners of Latour.

Calon de Segur is a 136-acre estate with typical Bordeaux varieties planted: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot, the vines are 25 years old on average, but they have some old vines between 45 and 60 years old. The terroir of Calon Ségur is unique in the Médoc. The soil is made up of a mixture of gravel, rocks, clay, sand, and limestone soils on the surface. Thanks to the combination of gravel and clay, the wines reflect a fine and elegant character with great power.

The wine consultant at Calon de Segur is rockstar Éric Boissenot. Eric consults at 40 of the 1855 Classified estates including Lafite, Margaux, Latour, Mouton Rothschild, Leoville Las Cases, and Ducru Beaucaillou.

2019 was an outstanding vintage for this region. It was awarded 97 points by Vinous Media who said it is "Unquestionably a Left Bank vintage. The sweet spot is in Saint-Estèphe and Pauillac, where so many wines are exceptional to profound, at all levels in the hierarchy of terroirs."

Tasting Notes: 57% Merlot, 38% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc. Intense ruby red color. Fruity aromas of fresh figs, blackberries, and cherries, notes of pepper. On the palate, it has firm and crispy tannins, elegant, and with a long finish. Pair this wine with game, roast chicken, braised, stewed, and grilled dishes.

Reviews

The second wine of classed growth Calon Ségur, this is becoming impressive in its own right. This vintage shows the structured side of Saint-Estèphe while also showing generous black fruits and bright acidity. It is set to age well. ~93-95 Wine Enthusiast

Chewy, structured red with blackberry, chocolate and some walnut and bark. It’s full-bodied and solid with lots of fruit and tannins. Second wine of Calon Segur. Needs five or six years to soften. Try after 2026. ~94 James Suckling

The 2019 Le Marquis de Calon Ségur is a terrific second wine. Ample, bold and dramatic, the 2019 packs a huge punch. Black cherry, plum, new leather, graphite and incense build as this flamboyant, opulent Saint-Estèphe shows off its considerable allure. The 2019 is a big wine, but the 15.1% alcohol is not especially evident. ~94 Vinous Media

Gorgeously plump blackberry and damson fruit here, high impact with chewy tannins that build through the palate and give an impression of confidence and pleasure. A clear crowd pleaser, with cocoa bean and chocolate shavings, no need to wait too long to approach. 30% new oak. ~93 Decanter

A bottle of wine I'd happily drink, the 2019 Le Marquis De Calon Ségur sports a ruby/purple hue as well as classic Saint-Estèphe notes of red and black fruits, damp earth, leafy herbs, and even some spicy, floral nuances that I don't normally find in young Saint-Estèphe. Medium-bodied on the palate, it's nicely balanced, has well-integrated acidity and tannins, and outstanding length. It's a rock solid second wine with loads to love. ~92 Jeb Dunnuck

Deep purple-black colored, the 2019 Le Marquis de Calon-Ségur wafts out of the glass with fragrant potpourri, garrigue and Darjeeling tea scents over a core of redcurrant jelly, plum preserves and blackcurrant pastilles plus a touch of cracked black pepper. The full-bodied palate has a rock-solid frame of grainy tannins with loads of freshness supporting the crunchy black fruits, finishing long and savory. ~90-92 Wine Advocate
